Going Public brought together three of Bejar’s incisive projects, Rec-elections (2012-Ongoing), Get Lost! (2009-2012), and Re-districting (2017), at this particular moment in 2018, approaching what are anticipated to be highly contested mid-term elections. In the words of the artist, “these multi-dimensional projects address the myth-making and weaponization of nostalgia used in presidential campaign slogans and elections, the erasure of language and identities resulting from the cumulative effects of colonialism, and local and national inequities arising from gerrymandered voting districts, respectively.”
The projects in Daniel Bejar’s Going Public expose how the machinations of power rely on tools such as language and cartography to mold the collectively held beliefs, assumptions, and memories within our public realms.
