Forever (Brooklyn, NY)
defaced USPS stamps on appropriated postcards mailed through the United States Postal System to The Old Stone House, Brooklyn, NY
4" x 6"
“Forever” is a site-specific intervention where appropriated postcards are mailed through the U.S. postal system to the exhibition venue with a defaced stamp reading “inEquality” rather than “Equality”. Originally reading “Equality” the defaced stamps have been altered with a custom rubber stamp and ink to create a unique print on each stamp to read “inEquality”. The U.S. postal system deems defaced stamps invalid and will not mail if detected. Mailed to the exhibition venue in hope of going undetected, the specifically chosen postcards of Brooklyn and NYC depict images of Wall Street, American flags, gentrified neighborhoods, neighborhoods under the poverty line, the police, and the homeless, to collectively paint a portrait of another side of the city which is profited from and which often goes unnoticed.
